
Units with high morale not only are guaranteed to stay under your control in a losing battle longer, they are more likely to survive a battle. When a unit fails a morale check you will be unable to control them and they will attempt to run from the battle. Morale is related to how likely it is that a unit will become broken and run from the battle. This is because a unit with large unit size can bring more firepower to bear on enemy units and morale often plays a larger role in whether a unit lives through a battle than defense does. Defense is less desirable than large unit size or high morale. Defense tends to be highly variable with infantry units ranging between one and seventeen, while most cavalry units have a defense between five and ten.

Like unit size part of the value of defense is that it makes your units more capable of surviving through battles so they can gain experience and be replenished to full strength. In a long conflict between two otherwise similar units a unit with a higher defense will lose soldiers more slowly than a unit with lower defense. You will then be able to replenish these valuable experienced units after the battle.ĭefense is a measure of how much punishment your army can take in melee combat. Larger units are not only more capable of controlling the battlefield through numerical advantage, they are also more likely to have surviving members. This aspect of the game makes units with a large unit size extremely valuable. However you can choose to replenish units up to their initial unit size by spending money to recruit troops which replenishing the unit. Losses of men in a battle are persistent. Unit size is listed in game in the upper left hand corner as "men" followed by a number, this term while clear as used in the game can become ambiguous as the context changes. Unit Size is a count of how many soldiers are in the unit.
